Buying a Home in an A Plus School District

Use these tips to buy a home in a top-notch school district.

When people begin their house hunt, a number of things influence their buying decision.  The quality of local school districts often tops their lists. Homes in good school districts are good investments for buyers with or without children.

For buyers with children, the quality of local schools is a top priority to ensure students can reach their full potential.

For buyers without children, buying a home in a top-notch school district benefits you by preserving home values and ensuring faster resale rates.

Finding a Home in a Good School District

If you're interested in buying a home, here are five tips for finding a home in an A-Plus school district.

  1. Do Your Homework
There are numerous sites online that offer information about schools.  GreatSchools.org has profiles of more than 200,000 schools and offers information about student diversity, student-to-teacher ratios, and extracurricular activities for public, private and charter schools.
  2. Charter and Magnet Schools
A magnet school is a public school that offers a specialized curriculum focused on one area, such as math, science or performing arts. Many magnet schools have competitive requirements for admission. Charter schools are free public schools that often offer unique benefits over public schools, such as smaller class sizes. A real estate agent can be a great person to ask for information about local charter and magnet schools.
  3. Visit Area Schools
Tour nearby schools and meet with principals, teachers, and administration staff. Inquire about the curriculum, school day, staff and policies. This will give you an idea of whether or not the school is right for your child.
  4. Talk to Neighbors
Before buying a house, ask neighbors for their opinions about the local schools. Parents are among the best people to obtain advice from about schools.
  5. Participate in Local Forums and Discussion Groups
Online discussion groups and forums and support groups are a great way to learn about the pros and cons of each school district in the area.  City-Data.com offers tons of information on local communities. It features local forums where you can obtain honest opinions about community schools from parents who live in the community.
